COLUMBIA, S.C. – A late rally by the Benedict College Tigers proved not to be enough as they fell to Savannah State University, 64-62, on Monday night in their final home game of the season.
Benedict falls to 11-14 overall and 7-9 in the SIAC. Savannah State improves to 9-11 overall and 9-8 in the SIAC.
Tyrese Mapp led the way for the Tigers with 15 points and seven rebounds.
Tajh Green added 14 points in his first game back from injury, while
NyQuan McCombs contributed with a game-high nine assists.
Benedict fell behind 28-18 with 5:18 remaining until the break after only shooting 1-for-9 (11 percent) from beyond the arc. The cold shooting continued for the Tigers as they shot 1-for-9 from the field to close out the half. Benedict trailed 32-22 at the half.
In the first four minutes of the second half, Benedict went on a 15-4 run to take their first lead since the 18:04 mark in the first half. Mapp and Green combined to score 13 of the 15 points during this run. The game then went back and forth as there were a total of seven lead changes and two ties in the following seven minutes of play.
An 11-2 run for Savannah State allowed them to take a 57-49 advantage with 3:49 remaining in regulation. McCombs proceeded to carry the Tigers, forcing two turnovers, coming up with every loose ball, and knocking down a three-point shot with one minute left to give the Tigers the one-point lead, 60-59. SSU's Trey Deloach answered with a 3-pointer with 32 seconds remaining. Savannah State sealed the game with two free throws before a buzzer-beating shot by Green to end the game.
Benedicts' bench held a 47-5 scoring advantage over Savannah State. The Tigers also held a 36-18 advantage in points scored in the paint.
Benedict will travel to Morehouse on Thursday for a 7 p.m. contest, as they will finish off the season with three final road games.
