COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College Tigers held off a late rally by Albany State and took a 90-88 victory on Sunday afternoon in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
The Tigers improve to 7-1 on the season, while Albany State falls to 2-6.
Benedict had as much as a 13-point lead, 75-62, in the second half and still had an 89-78 lead with 2:51 left to play when the Golden Rams stormed back, scoring 10 of the next 11 points. The Golden Rams missed a pair of shots in the final four seconds which could have tied the game. Benedict missed three field goals and two of three free throws in the final two minutes.
Tajh Green led the Tigers with 21 points and 14 rebounds, both season highs.
Jordan Rowley had a season-high 14 points, while
Aboubacar Camara also scored a season-high 14 points.
Timothy Bing Jr. chipped in with 12 points.
Benedict built a 10-point lead in the first half, 34-24, but the Golden Rams rallied and took as much as a five-point lead, 45-40. Benedict closed the gap to 51-49 at the half.
The Tigers used a 12-0 run early in the second half by pressuring the ball and forcing turnovers to take a 63-53 lead with 15:32 remaining.
Benedict shot 53.4 percent (39-of-73), while holding Albany State to 45.7 percent (32-of-70). That was a result of taking layups and close shots, as the Tigers scored 60 of their 90 points in the paint.
Benedict's scheduled game on Tuesday against Erskine has been cancelled, so the next game up for the Tigers is their final home game of the season on Thursday against Salem University at 7 p.m.
