COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College softball team edged Edward Waters College 1-0 in a defensive pitching duel in the first game of a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon, before committing seven errors in the second game and falling 10-7.
The loss was the first of the season for the Lady Tigers, who are now 7-1 on the season. Edward Waters goes to 10-6.
Deyonce Lewis out-pitched Edward Waters' Malani Sablan in the first game, allowing four hits over seven innings and did not walk a batter.
Benedict got its first hit of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning when Lewis beat out a bunt for a single. She stole second and scored on a double down left field line by
Zanila Booker. The Lady Tigers threatened again in the sixth inning, loading the bases with one out on a single, a walk and an error. Lewis was thrown out at home on the next play and a ground out ended the inning.
Edward Waters took advantage of six hits and four Benedict errors in the third inning of the second game to score nine runs to take a 10-2 lead. Benedict added three runs in the bottom of the third, getting a two-run triple by
Chesney Miller.
Deneisha Wooten had a two-run double in the fourth inning to cut the lead to 10-7.
Benedict is back in action on Wednesday, traveling to North Greenville for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
