COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College Lady Tigers rallied from an early 4-0 deficit to defeat Savannah State 10-7 in the first game of a doubleheader on Sunday. Savannah State scored five runs in the first inning of the second game and held on for a 14-7 victory.
Benedict moves to 9-5 overall. Savannah State moves to 10-5.
The Lady Tigers, playing in their final home doubleheader of the season, trailed 5-1 after three innings in the first contest. Benedict pushed across three runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Deneisha Wooten led off with a single to left field. With one out,
Taylor Wilson walked and
Chesney Miller followed with a two-run double. Miller later scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-4.
Savannah State made it 7-4 in the fifth with a two-run homer.
Benedict took the lead in the bottom of the fifth, scoring four runs on four hits, two Savannah State errors and a wild pitch.
Deyonce Lewis singled, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, then stole third and scored on a throwing error on the play. Wooten followed with a solo homer to make it 7-6. Wilson reached on an error, and later scored on a groundout to tie the game.
Rainah Khan scored Miller for the go-ahead run on a groundout.
The Lady Tigers added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth inning.
Taylor McNeal reached on a Savannah State error, stole second, and later scored on a wild pitch. Wooten scored Lewis on a groundout.
Miller went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, while Wooten went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Lewis earned the win.
In the second game, Savannah State scored five runs in the first inning, taking advantage of two hits and two Benedict errors. Benedict scored a run in the bottom of the first. Savannah State scored two more runs in the second, as Benedict committed two more errors. SSU added two runs in the third and three more in the fourth for a 12-2 lead.
Benedict scored three runs in the fourth inning, as
Miyah Rogers had an RBI single. The Lady Tigers added two runs in the sixth to cut the lead to 13-7 as Wooten had an RBI single.
Benedict will wrap up the season on Friday with a road trip to Savannah State for a rematch with the Tigers.
