FORT VALLEY, Ga. – Fort Valley State's K.J. Doucet hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to lift the Wildcats to a 61-58 victory over the Benedict College Tigers on Monday night in SIAC action.
Benedict took a 57-54 lead with 2:29 left to play on a layup by
Tajh Green. The Tigers missed three field goals and made one of two free-throw attempts over the final two and a half minutes. The Wildcats hit all four free-throw attempts and Doucet's 3-pointer on the final three possessions.
Benedict falls to 14-5 overall and 10-2 in the SIAC. Fort Valley State improves to 5-13 overall and 4-6 in the SIAC.
Green led the Tigers with 19 points and grabbed 13 rebounds.
Malachi McCoy also had a double-double with 13 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.
The Tigers shot 30.6 percent from the field, including 25 percent (8-of-32) in the second half. Benedict struggled from 3-point range, hitting just 2-of-24 attempts (8.3 percent), including missing all 12 attempts in the second half.
Benedict had a 35-29 lead at the half, rallying from an early eight-point deficit. Fort Valley State scored the first nine points of the second half to take a 38-35 lead. The Tigers rallied to take a 53-45 lead with 7:26 left in the game. The Wildcats scored the next seven points and the game stayed tight over the final five minutes.
The Tigers and Wildcats will have a rematch on Saturday afternoon in Columbia.
