COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College softball team erupted for 36 runs to sweep a non-conference doubleheader over St. Augustine's on Wednesday afternoon at Tiger Field.
The Lady Tigers took a 21-1 victory in the first game as
Deyonce Lewis pitched a one-hitter, and Benedict capitalized on seven St. Augustine's errors. Benedict rallied from a four-run deficit to take a 15-8 victory. The Lady Tigers improve to 3-1 on the season, while St. Augustine's falls to 0-4.
After taking an early one-run lead in the first game, the Lady Tigers scored six runs on three hits and four St. Augustine's errors in the second inning. Benedict scored 14 runs in the third inning, with 13 of them coming with two outs. The Lady Tigers had nine hits in the inning and took advantage of three more St. Augustine's errors.
Miyah Rogers started the scoring with an RBI single.
Deneisha Wooten drove in two runs on a single. Rogers came up to bat again in the inning and drove in three runs on a double.
Taylor McNeal also had an RBI single.
The Lady Falcons opened the second game with a first-inning grand slam for a 4-0 lead. Benedict tied the game in the second inning. St. Augustine's scored another run in the third, and Benedict took the lead in the bottom of the third as
T'Yannah Lake hit her first collegiate homer, a solo shot to center field, and
Keirra Evans scored on a wild pitch.
Camilla Crooks drove in a pair of runs and
Jamaiyah Howard drove in a run as the Lady Tigers built a 12-5 lead at the end of the fourth inning. The Lady Falcons hit a pair of home runs in the fifth inning to cut the lead to 12-8. Lake drove in a run in the bottom of the fifth.
Jada Blount and
Ajah Gaston drove in runs in the sixth for the final score.
The Lady Tigers travel to take on Edward Waters on Thursday.
