FORT VALLEY, Ga. – The Benedict College Lady Tigers swept a doubleheader from Fort Valley State on Saturday.
Benedict scored four runs in the first inning as
Olivia Townsend hit a two-run homer, and the Lady Tigers cruised to a 9-2 victory in the first game. In the second game, Benedict held off a late FVSU rally to take a 4-3 victory.
Benedict improves to 22-14 overall and 6-4 in the SIAC. Fort Valley State falls to 9-20 overall and 2-9 in the SIAC.
Deneisha Wooten had a two-run double, and Townsend hit a two-run homer, her eighth of the season. The Lady Tigers added two runs in the sixth on one hit and two Lady Wildcat errors. Benedict increased the lead to 9-1 with three runs in the top of the seventh.
Taylor McNeal had an RBI double.
In the second game, Fort Valley State struck first with a run in the first inning. Benedict got on the board with two runs in the fourth inning on a two-run double by
Briana Curney. Benedict increased the lead to 4-1 with two runs in the seventh on a bases-loaded single by
Deyonce Lewis.
Fort Valley scored two runs on a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the seventh to cut the lead to 4-3. The Lady Wildcats had a pair of runners on base with no outs in the bottom of the seventh, but the Lady Tigers got out of the jam on a pair of flyouts and a fielder's choice.
Benedict and Fort Valley State will play the third game of the conference series on Sunday.
