COLUMBIA, S.C. – Fort Valley State pounded out 15 hits and took advantage of seven Benedict errors to defeat the Lady Tigers 12-2 in a SIAC softball game on Saturday afternoon at Tiger Field.
Benedict was leading the second game of the doubleheader 11-6 in the top of the seventh inning when the game was suspended due to darkness. The two teams will resume the game on Sunday prior to their regularly-scheduled third game at 1 p.m.
In the first game, Benedict scored first in the bottom of the first, as
Deyonce Lewis tripled to left-center field and came home on a groundout by
T'yannah Lake. The Lady Wildcats took the lead in the second inning, scoring four runs on three hits and three Benedict errors. Fort Valley State added three more runs in the fourth inning and one more in the fifth and another in the sixth for a 9-1 lead.
Benedict added a run in the bottom of the sixth. Lake opened with a single,
Daneshia Wooten singled and
Tre'sor Eady followed with another single to score Lake.
In the second game, Fort Valley State opened the game with three runs in the first inning. Benedict scored one run in the first inning, then took the lead in the fourth inning when Lake hit a grand slam for a 6-3 lead. Lake added an RBI single in the fifth inning to give the Lady Tigers a 9-4 lead.
Ericka Young had a two-run double in the sixth for an 11-6 lead.
Benedict is now 12-17 overall and 5-6 in the SIAC. Fort Valley State moves to 10-17 overall and 7-8 in the SIAC.
