COLUMBIA, S.C. – Taylor Wilson hit a bases-loaded triple to drive in three runs and give Benedict the lead, and the Lady Tigers went on to take a 12-3 victory in the first game of a non-conference softball doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at Tiger Field, then had a two-run homer in the second game as Benedict won 8-6.
The Lady Tigers improve to 17-21 overall, while Paine falls to 5-18.
Paine scored three runs in the top of the fourth inning of the first game to take a 3-2 lead. Tanijah Washington and Chesney Miller had back-to-back singles to start the bottom of the fourth, then Ericka Young walked to load the bases. Wilson hit a triple to right field to give the Lady Tigers a 5-3 lead. Benedict added three more runs in the inning, including a solo homer by Olivia Townsend to increase the lead to 8-3. The Lady Tigers closed out the game with four runs in the fifth inning as Young had an RBI single and Deyonce Lewis had an RBI double. The final two runs came home on a Paine error.
In the second game, Benedict jumped out to an 8-2 lead, then held on for the win. Ariana Ellis had a two-run homer in the second inning, and Wilson had a two-run homer to left field in the fourth inning to make it 8-2.
Townsend earned the pitching victory in both games.
The Lady Tigers are back in action on Thursday against Fort Valley State. They will complete the game that was suspended on March 25, before playing the third game of their series.
