JACKSON, Tenn. – Lane used a 6-0 run in the second half to build a nine-point lead and held on to take a 79-71 victory over Benedict College in a SIAC men's basketball game on Saturday.
The Tigers trailed by as many as 11 points in the first half, but rallied to cut the lead to 35-32 at the half. In the second half, Benedict took a 46-45 lead after a 3-pointer by
Tariq Shepherd with 12:43 left to play. A free throw by
Donte Whymns cut Lane's lead to 57-54 with 8:02 remaining. The Dragons scored the next six points, getting a pair of fast-break layups, for a 63-54 lead. Benedict was not able to get the lead below six points the rest of the way.
Parker Grant led the Tigers, now 0-6 overall and 0-2 in the SIAC, with 17 points.
Johnny Taylor Jr. added 16 points, and Shepherd scored 15 points.
Benedict continues its Tennessee road trip with a game against LeMoyne-Owen College on Monday night.
