COLUMBIA, S.C. – Lane used a grand slam in the eighth inning to take the lead in the first game, then scored six runs in the first inning of the second game as the Dragons spoiled Benedict's season-opener in a SIAC baseball doubleheader on Saturday at Tiger Field.
Lane won the first game 13-9, rallying from a 9-6 deficit heading into the eighth inning. Lane won the second game 10-3.
Isaiah Canty went 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs in the first game, driving home two runs on a triple in the seventh inning to give the Tigers a 9-6 lead.
Justin Murray went 2-for-2 with two RBIs.
Jamell Mitchell Jr. had a pair of hits and drove in one run.
Lane opened the second game by scoring six runs in the first inning on five hits and three Benedict errors. The Dragons had an 8-0 lead before the Tigers got on the board in the fourth inning when Murray had an RBI single.
Kent Johnson had a solo home run in the sixth inning.
The Tigers (0-2 overall, 0-2 in the SIAC), and the Dragons (3-5 overall, 2-0 in the SIAC) will meet for the third game in the conference series on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Tiger Field.
