SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State never trailed and knocked off the 11
th-ranked Benedict College Tigers 85-77 in a SIAC men's basketball contest on Saturday.
Savannah State was able to upset the Tigers four days after Benedict beat Savannah State by 30 points at home. Benedict falls to 17-3 overall and 11-3 in the SIAC. Savannah State improves to 9-10 overall and 6-8 in the SIAC.
Benedict hit a season-low three 3-pointers, and shot 18.8 percent (3-of-16) from beyond the arc. Savannah State hit 51.9 percent of their field goals, and made 7-of-15 (46.7 percent) from 3-point range.
Tim Moore led Benedict with 27 points, while
Malachi McCoy added 16 points and
Calvin McCutcheon scored 13 points.
After Benedict tied the score at 4-4 early in the game, Savannah State jumped out to a 17-6 lead on a 10-0 run. Savannah State had a 44-29 lead at the half.
In the second half, Savannah State increased the lead to as much as 20 points, 59-39. Benedict cut the lead to six points, 72-66, after
Gob Gabriel hit three free throws. Savannah State scored the next eight points to push the lead back to 80-66 with 1:05 remaining.
Benedict travels to take on Edward Waters on Monday night.
