Spring Hill Sweeps Doubleheader Against Tigers

MOBILE, Ala. – The Benedict College Tigers dropped a SIAC baseball doubleheader to Spring Hill College on Sunday.

The Tigers played the three-time SIAC baseball champions close in both contests. Spring Hill rallied with five runs in the final two innings to take an 8-4 victory in the first game. The Tigers out-hit the Badgers 8-4 in the second game, but gave up two unearned runs and left nine runners on base as Spring Hill took a 3-1 victory.

In the first game, the Badgers scored a run in the first inning, but the Tigers tied the game in the third inning on a solo homer by Frankey Moree. The Badgers added two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Benedict scored three runs in the sixth inning to take a 4-3 lead. Jamell Mitchell Jr. led off with a single and stole second. Jacob Hall laid down a bunt and reached on an error, which allowed Mitchell to score. Taj Bates hit a double to score Hall and Jose Gil.

Spring Hill scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth and another in the bottom of the seventh.

In the second game, the Tigers broke a scoreless game in the fifth inning when Kent Johnson led off with a triple, and later came home on a single by Anthony Makinster. The Tigers had the bases loaded with just one out, but failed to score another run. Benedict also left the bases loaded in the fourth inning.

Spring Hill tied the game with a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth, then scored two runs in the sixth without a hit and three Benedict errors.

Benedict (7-6 overall, 6-5 SIAC) and Spring Hill (14-8 overall, 10-1 SIAC) will conclude their conference three-game series with a single game on Monday at 1 p.m. Central time.
