COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College baseball team split a SIAC doubleheader against Kentucky State on Saturday at Tiger Field.
The Tigers scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning of the first game to take the lead for good, then added three more insurance runs in the eighth inning to take a 15-7 victory. Kentucky State held Benedict to five hits in the second game to take an 11-1 victory.
Benedict goes to 8-8 overall and 7-7 in the SIAC. Kentucky State goes to 9-14 overall and 4-9 in the SIAC.
The Tigers pounded out 17 hits in the first game, with
Frankey Moree going 3-for-3 with an RBI, and
Jacob Hall going 3-for-5 with one RBI.
Kent Johnson drove in four runs on a pair of hits, clearing the loaded bases with a triple in the fifth inning, and adding another RBI single in the fourth.
Taj Bates had two hits, including a three-run homer in the eighth inning.
Nicholas Gioia picked up the win on the mound, going 7 1/3 innings.
In the second game, the Thorobreds jumped out to a 6-0 lead before the Tigers got a run in the bottom of the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly by
Taj Bates. The Thorobreds added five more runs in the top of the seventh inning.
Benedict and Kentucky State will wrap up their conference series on Sunday with a single game at 1 p.m.
