COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College baseball team swept a non-conference doubleheader over Paine College on Tuesday at Tiger Field.
The Tigers rallied with two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning of the first game as
Ri'shon Pearl hit a sharp single down the left field line to drive home the winning run in a 9-8 victory. The Tigers completed the sweep with a 10-4 victory in the second game.
The Tigers improve to 14-19 overall, while Paine falls to 13-15.
The Lions had an 8-4 lead after scoring six runs in the fifth inning. Benedict started the comeback with a two-run homer by
Malcolm Bates and an RBI single by
Jamell Mitchell Jr. to cut the lead to 8-7. In the bottom of the seventh,
Jose Gil hit a single to score the tying run. With the bases loaded, Pearl singled down the third-base line to score the winning run.
The Tigers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second game, but Paine tied the game in the top of the third. Benedict pulled away with four runs in the bottom of the fourth as Bates drove in two runs with a single, an error and a single by
Jacob Hall. Gil had a two-run double in the fifth inning, and
Frankey Moree added an RBI single to make it 10-3.
The Tigers travel to Jacksonville, Fla., to face Edward Waters in a three-game SIAC series with a doubleheader on Saturday.
