COLUMBIA, S.C. – Savannah State University swept a SIAC baseball doubleheader over the Benedict College Tigers on Friday.
Savannah State won the first game 15-4, with 12 of those runs coming in the final four innings. They won the second game 13-2 as Benedict committed five errors in the game, as the Tigers gave up just four earned runs.
Frankey Moree had an RBI triple in the first game to give the Tigers an early 1-0 lead. Savannah State scored two runs in the third, but Benedict tied the game with an RBI single by
Kent Johnson in the bottom of the third. Savannah took the lead with an RBI double in the top of the fourth, then pulled away with six runs in the sixth, two in the eighth, and closed out the game with four runs in the ninth.
In the second game,
Jamell Mitchell Jr. scored on a throwing error on a failed pickoff attempt to tie the game at 1-1. Savannah State scored three runs on one hit and a Benedict error in the second inning, another run in the fourth inning, then scored four runs on three hits and two errors in the fifth and four runs on two hits and two errors in the sixth. Johnson had a solo home run in the sixth inning for the Tigers.
Benedict (14-24 overall, 10-22 SIAC) and Savannah State (27-13 overall, 20-12 SIAC) will wrap up the regular season with a single game on Saturday. Benedict will honor senior
