COLUMBIA, S.C. – Edward Waters scored a 3-pointer off a Benedict turnover with 13 seconds left to edge the Benedict College Tigers 73-71 in a SIAC men's basketball game on Saturday afternoon in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
Benedict had taken a 71-70 lead with 39 seconds remaining in the close, back-and-forth contest, after a layup by
Cadarius Baggett. Edward Waters missed a shot with 24 seconds left, but Benedict turned the ball back over with 19-seconds on the clock for the go-ahead basket. Benedict missed a potential game-winning 3-pointer and a potential game-tying put-back at the buzzer.
Edward Waters, tied for the top spot in the SIAC East Division, improves to 13-6 overall and 9-3 in the SIAC.
Benedict had as much as a 13-point lead, 22-9, after a 3-pointer by
Donte Whymns, in the first half. Edward Waters rallied to cut the lead to 37-35 at the half.
In the second half, neither team had more than a four-point lead.
Caleb Hymon scored a Benedict career-high 21 points, while
Cadarius Baggett added 17 points. Whymns had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Benedict, now 3-15 overall and 3-9 in the SIAC after suffering their sixth straight loss, will be back in action on Monday night when they host Savannah State at 7:30 p.m.
