JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Edward Waters hit a jumper just before the buzzer to edge Benedict 75-73 in a SIAC men's basketball game on Monday night.
Tariq Shepherd hit a 3-pointer with 16 seconds left to give Benedict a 73-72 lead. Edward Waters tied the game with a free throw with seven seconds remaining. After a Benedict turnover, Edward Waters hit the game-winning shot.
Benedict had as much as a 14-point lead, 41-27, early in the second half against the SIAC's East Division leading team. Edward Waters used a 10-0 run in the second half to cut the lead to 45-44 with 12:54 left in the game. The Tigers built the lead back to 10 points, 54-44. Edward Waters chipped away at the lead until they tied the game at 65 on a 3-pointer with 3:48 remaining.
The Tigers fall to 4-19 overall, 4-12 in the SIAC. Edward Waters improves to 16-7 overall and 12-3 in the SIAC.
Caleb Hymon led the Tigers with 21 points, while grabbing nine rebounds. Shepherd added 14 points and
Bretner Mutumbo scored a season-high 11 points and grabbed a season-high eight rebounds.
The Tigers travel to Albany State next Saturday for a 3 p.m. contest.
