COLUMBIA, S.C. – Benedict College used a 9-2 run in the second half to build an eight-point lead and held rival Allen University for a 65-61 victory in a SIAC men's basketball game on Saturday afternoon in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.

The win was the 100th career victory for Benedict head coach Artis Maddox, who is now 100-86 through seven seasons. Benedict improves to 6-20 overall and 6-13 in the SIAC and secured a spot in the upcoming SIAC basketball tournament. Allen, now 6-18 overall and 2-16 in the SIAC, is eliminated from advancing to the tournament.

The Tigers went 22-of-25 from the free-throw line, for 88 percent, their second-best effort from the line this season. Allen struggled from the line, going 12-of-20.

The Yellow Jackets built as much as a seven-point lead in the first half before the Tigers rallied to take a 27-24 lead at the half. The second half remained close, with neither team holding more than a four-point lead until Benedict used a five-point run for a 58-50 lead with 4:56 left to play.

Allen cut the lead to 62-59 with 1:42 remaining. Shepherd helped seal the win with two free throws with 19 seconds left.
