COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College baseball team scored 52 runs in three games to sweep a three-game SIAC weekend series over LeMoyne-Owen College at Tiger Field.
Benedict swept Saturday's doubleheader. In the first game, the Tigers scored 15 runs in the sixth inning to break away from a close game and take a 20-6 victory. Benedict pushed across seven runs in the fourth inning of the second game to take a 16-11 victory.
On Sunday, the Tigers were trailing 4-3 before taking the lead with five runs in the fifth inning, then added five more in the sixth and three in the seventh for a 16-5 victory.
With the sweep, Benedict moves to 3-2 overall and 3-2 in the SIAC.
In the first game,
Cameron Haley hit a home run and drove in five runs.
Jaquez Akins hit a pair of doubles and drove in four runs. Benedict pounded out 15 hits. The Tigers had seven hits, took advantage of two LeMoyne-Owen errors, walked five times and two hit batters in the 15-run seventh inning.
In game two, the Magicians jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first inning, but the Tigers scored four runs in the bottom of the first and added three more runs in the second. Benedict had a 9-7 lead going into the bottom of the fourth inning, when the Tigers pushed across seven runs.
Justin Murray and
Elijah Banks each had a home run. Murray and
Jose Gil drove in three runs each.
In Sunday's third game, the Tigers were trailing 4-3 heading into the fifth inning. Benedict scored five runs in the fifth to take the lead, then added five more runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh.
The Tigers hit four home runs in the game, as
Juan Guardado hit two home runs, and Murray and Haley also had home runs. Murray and Haley drove in three runs each, while
Kenyan Conner Jr. went 3-for-3 and drove in two runs.
Benedict will play a non-conference doubleheader against Claflin on Wednesday at Tiger Field, starting at noon.
