COLUMBIA, S.C. – The high-scoring Benedict College baseball team hit four more home runs on Sunday to sweep a doubleheader from Morehouse College.
Isaiah Canty hit a home run and a triple and drove in four runs as Benedict took a 12-11 victory in the first game. The Tigers, who rank second in the nation in home runs per game, hit three home runs, including a grand slam by Canty in the fifth inning, as Benedict crushed Morehouse 21-2 in the second game.
Benedict ranks second in NCAA Division II in home runs per game (1.89) and second in the nation in runs per game (11.6).
In the first game, Morehouse had a 4-2 lead going into the bottom of the fifth inning.
Justin Murray hit a RBI double to make it 4-3, but Morehouse added two more runs in the top of the sixth for a 6-3 lead. Benedict tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the sixth, scoring three runs on just one hit – an infield single by
Jose Gil – with three walks, one hit batsman, and a Morehouse error.
Benedict took the lead in the seventh with four runs. Canty had a two-run triple, with the other runs scoring on a sacrifice fly by
Jaquez Akins and a Morehouse error.
Morehouse hit a two-run homer in the eighth to cut the lead to 10-8. Benedict answered with a two-run homer by Canty in the bottom of the eighth for a 12-8 lead. Morehouse hit a three-run homer with two outs in the ninth to cut the lead to 12-11, but a groundout ended the game.
The second game was all Benedict, as the Tigers scored five runs in the first inning, four more in the second, and three in the third for a 12-1 lead. Benedict erupted for nine runs in the fifth inning, as
Justin Murray hit a two-run homer, Canty had a grand slam, and
Kenyan Conner Jr., had a three-run blast.
Murray and Conner drove in five runs each, while Canty drove in four runs and
Jonathan Olmedo drove in three runs.
Benedict improves to 13-9 overall and 11-9 in the SIAC. Morehouse falls to 13-15 overall and 9-12 in the SIAC.
Benedict travels to Clark Atlanta for a three-game series next weekend with a doubleheader on Saturday starting at noon.
