COLUMBIA, S.C. –
Cameron Haley hit a single up the middle in the 10
th inning to drive in the winning run as the Benedict College baseball team defeated Edward Waters 20-19 on Saturday afternoon at Tiger Field.
Edward Waters was leading the second game of the doubleheader 15-2 before the game was suspended due to darkness. The game will be resumed Sunday morning before the third game of the conference series.
In a high-scoring battle that saw the two teams combing for 39 hits, Benedict (7-4 overall, 5-4 SIAC) jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the third inning. Edward Waters (12-9, 6-4) scored 13 unanswered runs to take a 15-8 lead. Benedict scored five runs in the sixth inning to cut the lead to 17-15. Edward Waters added two more runs in the top of the eighth inning to make it 19-15.
In the bottom of the eighth,
Nicholas Gioia hit a two-run home run and
Jonathan Olmedo drove in a run with a double. Haley later scored the tying run to make it 19-19. Both teams left one runner on base in the ninth, forcing the teams going into extra innings.
In the 10
th inning, Edward Waters went three-up, three-down. Olmedo led off the bottom of the 10th with a double and later advanced to third on a wild pitch. Then Haley hit his game-winning single.
Tymon Holloman, Benedict's fourth pitcher, picked up the win on the mound, allowing just one hit over two innings.
