TUSKEGEE, Ala. – The Benedict College baseball team scored eight runs in the first inning and went on to take a 22-5 victory over Tuskegee in the first game of a SIAC doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.
Tuskegee held off Benedict in the second game to win 7-6.
Benedict scored eight runs in the first inning of the first game on just three hits, three walks, two Tuskegee errors and one hit batsman.
Carson Fellows hit a bases-loaded double to drive in three runs.
Isaiah Canty drove in a run with a double and
Nicholas Gioia drove in a pair of runs with a single.
The Tigers scored a run in the third on an infield single by Canty, then added three more runs in the fourth to make it 12-0.
Donnie Weston had an RBI single,
Jamell Mitchell Jr. drew a bases-loaded walk, and Canty brought home a run on a fielder's choice.
After Tuskegee cut the lead to 12-5, Benedict added a pair of runs in the sixth, then closed out the game with eight more runs in the seventh.
Jaquez Akins,
Jonathan Olmedo and Gioia all had RBI singles, and
Jacob Hall brought home a pair of runs on a single.
Shane Williams picked up the win on the mound, going all seven innings, scattering six hits and striking out one while walking three.
In the second game, Akins had an RBI single in the first inning, but Tuskegee scored three runs in the bottom of the first and three more in the second for a 6-1 lead. Benedict scored one run in the top of the third and Tuskegee answered with a run in the bottom of the third to make it 7-2.
Benedict chipped away at the lead, scoring two runs in the fourth, as Gioia had an RBI single. Benedict scored another run in the fifth on a passed ball and one run in the sixth on a wild pitch to cut the lead to 7-6.
Benedict goes to 17-11 overall and 15-11 in the SIAC, while Tuskegee goes to 13-27 overall and 8-18 overall.
Benedict will play a non-conference doubleheader against Morris on Monday at Tiger Field, starting at 1 p.m.
