COLUMBIA, S.C. – The 25
th-ranked Spring Hill College baseball team swept a doubleheader over the Benedict College Tigers on Saturday afternoon at Tiger Field.
The Badgers won the first game 19-6, scoring 15 runs in the final four innings. The Badgers won the second game 15-9, jumping out to a 15-2 lead in the fourth inning.
Spring Hill improves to 33-10 overall and 26-2 in the SIAC, extending their SIAC winning streak to 15 games. Benedict falls to 19-15 overall and 15-13 in the SIAC.
In the first game, Spring Hill had a 4-0 lead before the Tigers scored five runs in the fourth inning to take a 5-4 lead.
Kenyan Conner Jr. drew a bases-loaded walk to score the first run, then
Jamell Mitchell Jr., cleared the bases with a three-run double.
Isaiah Canty followed with a single to score Mitchell and give the Tigers the lead.
Spring Hill regained the lead in the fifth inning with two runs, then added four runs in the sixth, three runs in the seventh and six runs in the eighth to make it 19-5. Benedict added a run in the bottom of the eighth.
In the second game, Spring Hill jumped out to an early lead, scoring seven runs in the top of the first inning.
Juan Guardado hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the first to make it 7-2. The Badgers increased the lead to 15-1 before the Tigers scored a run on a sacrifice fly by
Carson Fellows.
A Spring Hill error allowed the Tigers to score a run in the sixth inning, and Benedict scored five runs in the seventh. Conner had a two-run double, Canty hit a sacrifice fly and
Nicholas Gioia hit a two-run homer.
Benedict and Spring Hill will wrap up their conference series with a single game on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Tigers will recognize 10 seniors prior to the start of the game.
