COLUMBIA, S.C. – Benedict held Savannah State to one hit in the first game, the rallied in the second game to sweep a SIAC softball doubleheader on Saturday at Tiger Field.
Benedict won the first game 2-1, then took the second game 7-5.
In the first game, starter
Savanna Marshall and reliever
Kierra Evans held Savannah State without a hit until a single into the outfield in the top of the seventh. Savannah State scored a run in the second inning after a walk, a groundout, and a Benedict error.
Benedict tied the game in the fourth inning on a single and a pair of Savannah State errors. Benedict scored the go-ahead run in the sixth inning as
Tre'sor Eady hit a two-out single, then
Taylor Gilbert followed with a triple.
In the second game, Savannah State had a 3-1 lead before Benedict took the lead with three runs in the fifth inning.
Elisha Ramirez hit a two-out single to drive in one run, then
Heaven Strickland hit a hard shot down the third-base line for a two-run double.
Benedict added three more runs in the sixth to make it 7-3. Gilbert had an RBI single and Ramirez drove home two runs on a single.
Benedict (14-16 overall, 9-11 in the SIAC) and Savannah State (14-20, 10-10) will play the final game of the series at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
