COLUMBIA, S.C. – Morehouse College used a seven-point run in the second half to take the lead and held off a late Benedict College rally to take a 58-54 victory over the Tigers in a SIAC men's basketball game on Saturday afternoon in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
Benedict had as much as a nine-point lead, 16-7, in the first half, and had a 25-23 lead at the half. In the second half, Benedict had a 29-28 lead before the Maroon Tigers scored the next seven points and never trailed again.
Benedict stayed within striking distance, and cut the lead to 48-46 with 4:23 remaining, but Morehouse answered with a 3-pointer, and later built the lead to 55-48 with 2:31 left on the clock. A pair of free throws by
Landon Jeffries cut the lead to 55-52 with 33 seconds remaining, but Morehouse sealed the game by sinking three of four free throws in the final 27 seconds.
Benedict falls to 4-7 overall and 4-7 in the SIAC. Morehouse moves to 8-7 overall and 8-3 in the SIAC.
Jeffries led the Tigers with 13 points, while
Jordan Brewer came off the bench to score 10 points.
Benedict returns to action on Wednesday with a home game against Savannah State at 7:30 p.m.
