COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict Tigers used a 7-2 run early in the second half to take the lead and held on for the rest of the game to take a 60-54 victory over Savannah State University in a SIAC men's basketball game on Wednesday night in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
Savannah State had as much as a six-point lead in the first half, and clung on to a 23-21 lead at the half. A 3-pointer by
Caleb Hymon gave Benedict a 26-23 lead early in the second half. Savannah State came back and took a 30-29 lead with 16 minutes left on the clock.
Cole White scored on a layup to give Benedict back the lead and the Tigers never trailed again, holding off several runs by Savannah State.
Benedict had a 51-44 lead, their largest in the second half, but Savannah State was able to trim the lead to 57-54 with 1:09 left to play.
Kameron Foman scored off an offensive rebound with 35 seconds remaining to push the lead to five points. Foman finished off the game with a free throw with 20 seconds remaining.
Benedict improves to 5-7 overall and 5-7 in the SIAC, snapping a three-game losing streak. Savannah State falls to 6-8 overall and 6-6 in the SIAC.
White led the Tigers with 16 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
Malachi Chavis added 14 points, while
Jordan Brewer chipped in 11 points.
Benedict is back in action on Saturday, traveling across Taylor Street to take on rival Allen University at 4 p.m.
