FORT VALLEY, Ga. – The Fort Valley State Wildcats scored their final eight points from the free-throw line to pull away from a close contest and defeat the Benedict Tigers 60-54 in a SIAC men's basketball contest on Monday night.
Jordan Brewer converted a three-point play with 3:10 left in the game to cut the lead to 49-46. A free throw, and a jumper, gave the Wildcats a 52-46 lead with 2:09 left in the game.
Jamian Jackson hit a 3-pointer with 1:14 on the clock to cut the lead to 53-49.
The Wildcats sank two more free throws before Jackson was fouled on a 3-point attempt and sank all three free throws to cut the lead to 55-52 with 36 seconds remaining. Fort Valley State sealed the game by sinking five of their final six free throws in the final 30 seconds.
Benedict falls to 4-6 overall and 4-6 in the SIAC. Fort Valley State improves to 6-4 overall and 5-4 in the SIAC.
The game was close throughout. The Tigers took their largest lead of the game, 20-13, late in the first half and had a 22-17 lead at the half. Fort Valley State took their first lead since early in the first half, 28-27, on a fast-break dunk with 14:16 left to play. Benedict's last lead was 39-38 with 8:57 on the clock.
Kameron Foman led the Tigers with a double-double of 15 points and 15 rebounds. Brewer added 13 points.
The Tigers return to action on Saturday, when they face Morehouse at 3 p.m. in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
