JACKSON, Tenn. – The Benedict College men's basketball team outscored Lane College 6-1 in the final two minutes of the game to defeat the Dragons 66-64 in a SIAC contest on Tuesday night.
The Tigers rallied after trailing by 10 points, 53-43, with 8:22 remaining in the game. Benedict went on a 12-2 run after that to tie the game at 55 with 6:42 left to play, and the game was tight the rest of the way.
The Dragons hit a pair of free throws to take a 63-60 lead with just under two minutes left.
Tareeq Anderson hit two free throws with 1:40 on the clock, and
Malachi Chavis added one free throw to tie the game with 57 seconds remaining.
After a missed shot by the Dragons,
Cristian Willis hit a jumper to give Benedict a 65-63 lead with 19 seconds left to play. Lane made one of two free-throw attempts with six seconds remaining.
Caleb Hymon sealed the game with a free throw with three seconds left to play.
Chavis led the Tigers with 16 points, while Willis came off the bench to score 12 points. Anderson added 11 points.
Benedict improves to 10-10 overall and 10-10 in the SIAC. Lane falls to 7-12 overall and 7-10 in the SIAC.
The Tigers return to action on Saturday, when they host rival Allen University at 3 p.m. as part of Reunion Weekend. All Benedict alumni, and especially former student-athletes, are encouraged to return and support the Benedict teams. Benedict will honor a pair of seniors prior to the game in Hymon and
Jalen Blunt.
