COLUMBIA, S.C. –
Milton Herring drove in five runs, including the go-ahead runs in the sixth inning, as the Benedict College baseball team won their first game of the season with a 16-12 victory over Lane College on a cold and blustery Sunday afternoon at Tiger Field.
The Tigers (1-3 overall, 1-3 in the SIAC) jumped out to a 9-3 lead after the fifth inning, but the Dragons (4-7 overall, 2-2 in the SIAC) rallied to tie the game at 9-9, thanks to a three-run homer in the sixth inning.
Herring drove in a pair of runs with a one-out single to left field in the bottom of the sixth to put the Tigers back on top, 11-9. Lane added a run in the seventh to cut the lead to 11-10. In the bottom of the seventh,
Jonathan Olmedo hit a two-out RBI double, and later scored on a wild pitch to give the Tigers a 13-10 lead.
Lane scored a pair of runs in the eighth inning to cut the lead to 13-12, but the Tigers tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the eighth.
Joshua Medina hit a single that was mishandled in the outfield that led to two runs. Another error in the outfield led to Benedict's final run. Lane committed five errors in the contest.
Medina went 2-for-2 with two RBIs.
Kent Johnson went 2-for-5 with an RBI, and
Kenyan Conner Jr. went 2-for-4 and scored three runs.
Benedict and Lane will continue their SIAC series with a doubleheader on Monday, starting at 11 a.m.
