COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College softball team put up a gallant fight against Albany State in the second game of a softball doubleheader, but the Lady Rams scored the go-ahead run in the sixth inning for a 5-4 victory.
Mikaila Rodgers led off the bottom of the seventh with a single and stole second and third to give the Lady Tigers the potential tying run on third base. After a couple of infield outs, a walk and a hit batter loaded the bases. A groundout ended the game.
Albany State had a 4-1 lead after the top of the fourth inning. Benedict scored a run in the bottom half when
Cayla Crooks scored on a wild pitch. The Lady Tigers tied the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Kayla Hunt led off with a double and later scored on a passed ball.
Shamaria Dupree singled and later came home on a double by
Alexis Gatlin.
The Lady Golden Rams (13-2 overall, 3-0 SIAC) had 14 hits and scored six runs in the seventh inning for a 15-6 victory in the first game of the day. Gatlin went 2-for-4 with two RBIs for the Lady Tigers, while Crooks went 2-for-3.
Benedict (0-12 overall, 0-6 SIAC) will take on Voorhees in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday at 1 p.m. from Tiger Field.
