SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Benedict College baseball team scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning to take a 6-3 victory over Savannah State to earn a split of their doubleheader on Saturday.
Savannah State won the first game in the series 17-2, pounding out 19 hits in the contest.
In the second game, Benedict scored first when
Kenyan Conner Jr. hit an RBI single in the third inning. Savannah State tied the game in the bottom of the third, and took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning. Benedict scored a pair of runs in the sixth inning to retake the lead.
Jonathan Olmedo hit a double to score
Joshua Medina to tie the game, and
Cameron Haley followed with a single to score Olmedo.
Savannah State tied the game in the bottom of the seventh, and the score remained tied until the top of the ninth, when
Michael Belcher hit a one-out single,
Jaquez Akins walked, and
Christopher Trujillo Ruiz tripled.
Jim Johnson followed with a sacrifice fly to score Ruiz.
Anthony Ramos, who earned the win on the mound by working the final 2 1/3 innings, closed out the game with a three-up, three-down ninth inning.
In the first game, Benedict was held to five hits. Ruiz had two hits, including a double. Medina and
Curtis Lindsey had RBIs.
Benedict (10-6 overall, 8-6 SIAC) and Savannah State (12-11 overall, 9-5 SIAC) will wrap up their series with a single game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
