COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina State University swept a non-conference softball doubleheader over the Benedict College Lady Tigers at Tiger Field.
The Division I Bulldogs won both games in five innings, holding Benedict to a single hit in the first game to win 11-0, then pounded 22 hits with three home runs in the second game for a 22-5 victory.
Cayla Crooks had Benedict's only hit in the first game. The Lady Tigers committed five errors in the contest.
South Carolina State scored six runs in the second inning of the second game, and added six more in the third inning for a 12-0 lead. The Lady Tigers scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the third on a Bulldog fielding error.
S.C. State (11-8) added four runs in the fourth and six more in the fifth for a 22-2 lead. Benedict scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, with two runs coming home on another S.C. State error, and
Tamia Daniels scoring on a wild pitch.
Benedict (5-22) recorded four hits, one each by
Heaven Strickland,
Alexis Gatlin,
Myia Lambert and
Hope Gunn.
Benedict returns to action with a three-game SIAC series against Edward Waters this weekend. Saturday's doubleheader starts at 1 p.m.
