COLUMBIA, S.C. – Edward Waters rallied with five runs in the final two innings to take a 7-5 victory over Benedict College and swept a SIAC softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Tiger Field.
Edward Waters scored 13 runs on just three hits in the first game for a 13-1 victory.
The Lady Tigers had a 4-0 lead after four innings in the second game. Benedict opened the scoring in the first inning when
Heaven Strickland singled, stole second and third, and came home on a groundout by
Hope Gunn.
Gunn led off the fourth inning with a double, advanced to third when
Myia Lambert's popup in front of home plate was dropped, and scored on a single by
Cayla Crooks. Lambert scored on a groundout, and Crooks later scored on a wild pitch for a 4-0 lead.
Edward Waters scored two runs in the fifth. Crooks hit an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth to make it 5-2.
Edward Waters scored two runs in the sixth inning on a pair of hits and a Benedict error. Edward Waters tied the game in the seventh inning on a wild pitch with two outs, and later scored the go-ahead run on a Benedict error and then added another run on a wild pitch.
In the first game, Edward Waters scored four runs in the first inning on one hit, one Benedict error, and a pair of walks. They added six more runs in the second inning on two hits, two Benedict errors and three walks.
Benedict had two hits in the game – a solo by Lambert in the second inning and a single by
Alexis Gatlin in the fourth inning.
Benedict (5-24 overall, 3-14 SIAC) and Edward Waters (19-12 overall, 10-7 SIAC) will wrap up their SIAC series with a single game on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Tiger Field.
