COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College Tigers held off a ninth-inning rally to beat Morehouse 9-8 in the first game, then pounded out 17 hits for a 19-3 victory in the second game to sweep a SIAC baseball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Tiger Field.
Morehouse held a 4-3 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, when the Tigers took the lead with a pair of runs.
Christopher Trujillo Ruiz drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the score, and
Jonathan Olmedo hit a single to center field for the go-ahead run.
The Tigers added four runs in the eighth inning without the benefit of a hit to take a 9-4 lead. With two outs,
Joshua Medina,
Jaquez Akins,
Cameron Haley and
Kenyan Conner Jr. all drew bases-loaded walks.
Morehouse scored four runs in the top of the ninth on a pair of hits and two Benedict errors.
Garvey Chiarolanzio came in relief to get the final two outs to earn the save.
In the second game, Morehouse had a 3-1 lead heading into the bottom of the third inning when the Benedict Tigers scored eight runs. Olmedo had an RBI triple,
Kent Johnson drove home Olmedo with a single, Haley hit a two-run double, and
Milton Herring had an RBI single.
Benedict added four more runs in the fourth inning. Medina had an RBI single, Herring had a sacrifice fly and
Colin Jones had an RBI single.
Medina went 4-for-4 with one RBI, while Conner went 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Haley drove in three runs on a two-run double and a bases-loaded walk, while Johnson went 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs.
Lefrederick Wooten went the distance on the mound for his fifth win of the season.
Benedict (14-8 overall and 12-8 in the SIAC) and Morehouse (14-12 overall, 11-7 SIAC) will wrap up their SIAC series with a single game on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Tiger Field.
