COLUMBIA, S.C. –
Jaquez Akins hit a home run for the go-ahead runs in the sixth inning and
Kent Johnson hit a grand slam in the seventh inning as the Benedict Tigers defeated Morehouse 16-8 on Sunday afternoon.
The Tigers swept the three-game SIAC series over Morehouse and improved to 15-8 overall and 13-8 in the SIAC. Morehouse falls to 14-13 overall and 11-8 in the SIAC.
Morehouse took a 7-4 lead after scoring two runs in the top of the fifth inning. Benedict tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Milton Herring had an RBI single,
Kenyan Conner Jr. scored on a passed ball and Herring later scored on a groundout to tie the score at 7-7.
Akins hit a one-out three-run homer to left field in the bottom of the sixth to give Benedict a 10-7 lead.
Morehouse added a run in the top of the seventh to make it 10-8. In the bottom of the seventh,
Christopher Trujillo Ruiz had an RBI single. With the bases loaded and no outs, Johnson hit a full-count pitch over the right-field wall for a 15-8 lead.
Cameron Haley added an RBI single later in the inning to make it 16-8.
Johnson went 3-for-5 with four RBIs, while
Jaquez Akins went 2-for-3 with four RBIs and
Jonathan Olmedo went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and three RBIs.
Jim Johnson came on in relief to pitch the final five innings to earn the win on the mound.
Benedict travels to Atlanta next weekend for a three-game series against Clark Atlanta. They will play a doubleheader on Friday starting at noon.
