COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College baseball team sent seven seniors out in style, as the Tigers defeated Tuskegee 20-10 on Sunday at Eau Claire High School to complete the three-game SIAC series sweep.
Benedict (19-10 overall, 17-10 SIAC) matched their season-high with 20 runs scored, and did it with only 12 hits. Three Tuskegee (11-29 overall, 8-20 SIAC) pitchers issued 11 walks, had one wild pitch and hit seven batters.
The Tigers scored five runs in the first inning on just one hit, pushing across runs on a pair of bases-loaded walks, a bases-loaded hit batsman, a passed ball and an error.
After Tuskegee closed the gap to 5-2 with a pair of runs in the second inning, Benedict scored five more runs in the third inning on four hits and two Tuskegee errors.
Milton Herring had an RBI single and
Jonathan Olmedo drove home two runs with a single to the outfield.
Tuskegee scored two runs in the fourth, but Benedict answered with four runs on just two hits in the bottom of the fourth.
Cameron Haley scored on a passed ball, Olmedo drove home another run with a single to the outfield, and
Joshua Medina scored a pair of runs with a ground ball up the middle to make it 14-4.
The Tigers scored six runs on four hits in the sixth inning to make it 20-6.
Kenyan Conner Jr. had a two-run single, Herring had a two-run double, and later scored on a wild pitch.
Prior to the game, Benedict honored seven seniors – Haley, Conner, Olmedo,
Christopher Trujillo Ruiz,
Myles Blue,
Kent Johnson, and Conner Boan.
Olmedo led the Tigers at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs, while also picking up the win on the mound. Olmedo pitched 4 2/3 innings in relief, allowed five hits and three walks while striking out seven. Medina went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, while Conner drove in three runs.
Benedict will close out the regular season next weekend with a three-game series at Miles College, starting with a doubleheader on Friday starting at 12 noon Central Time.
