ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Claflin University swept a softball doubleheader over the Benedict College Lady Tigers on Wednesday.
Claflin won the first game 5-3, and then took the second game 18-3.
The Lady Tigers were held without a hit in the first game.
Shamaria Dupree opened the game by reaching on an error and later scored. Claflin scored four runs in the bottom of the first to take a 4-1 lead.
In the second inning,
Hope Gunn was hit by a pitch and later scored on a wild pitch to cut the lead to 4-2.
Alaina Harvey reached on a fielder's choice in the fifth inning, and scored on another Claflin error to cut the lead to 4-3.
Claflin added another run in the sixth inning.
Claflin (16-11) scored five runs in the first inning of the second game on two hits and two Benedict errors. The Lady Tigers scored a run in the second on an RBI double by Harvey. Claflin added four more runs in the second, five runs in the third and four runs in the fourth to take an 18-1 lead.
The Lady Tigers pushed across a pair of runs in the fifth as Harvey singled, and later scored on an error.
Ariah Smith walked and later scored on a passed ball.
Benedict, now 8-26 overall, play at Savannah State for a three-game SIAC series this weekend. They will play a doubleheader on Friday starting at 2 p.m.
