FRANKFORT, Ky. – Junior center
Marcus Goode had his third straight double-double, scoring 28 points and grabbing 11 rebounds, to lead the 24th-ranked Benedict College Tigers to a 75-70 victory over the Kentucky State University Thorobreds in an SIAC basketball game on Monday.
Rickie Jackson added 16 points, hitting four 3-pointers, and
Trevor Eichelberger added 12 points for the Tigers, who improved to 6-2 overall and 5-1 in the SIAC.
The Tigers shot 53.5 percent for the game, making 23 of 43 shots. They held the Thorobreds to 38.2 percent shooting.
Kentucky State had a 64-63 lead after a pair of free throws by William Marsh with three minutes left in the game. The Tigers came back and regained the lead for good on a layup by Goode. Goode followed that with another layup, was fouled, and hit the free throw for a three-point play to put the Tigers ahead 68-64 with 2:13 left to play.
Troy Adams hit a jumper for Kentucky State to cut the lead to 68-66 with 1:50 on the clock, but Jackson hit a pair of free throws for a 70-66 lead. Kentucky State missed a 3-pointer on the other end, and
Branden Herring scored on a layup to give the Tigers a six-point cushion, 72-66, with 43 seconds left.
Adams scored a fastbreak layup with 16 seconds left to bring the Thorobreds to within two at 72-70, but that was as close as they would get as the Tigers closed out the game from the line.
Adams led Kentucky State with 19 points. The Thorobreds fall to 5-4 overall and 5-4 in the SIAC.
Benedict returns home for the first time since November to take on Albany State University on Thursday at the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
