Lady Tigers Win Sixth Straight, Down Kentucky State

FRANKFORT, Ky. – The Benedict College Lady Tigers won their sixth straight game and stayed on top of the SIAC standings with a 71-63 victory over Kentucky State on Monday night.

The Lady Tigers shot a season-best 50.9 percent from the floor, hitting 27 of 53 shots. Alexus Jones and Santera Grooms each had 14 points to lead the Lady Tigers, now 7-1 overall and 6-0 in the SIAC. Monique Weathers and Cierra Moore added 11 points each and Brittany Jackson had a team-best 12 rebounds.

Benedict held Kentucky State to just 37.7 percent shooting (23-of-61). Kentucky State dropped to 4-7 overall and 4-5 in the SIAC.

Benedict built as much as a 15-point lead in the second half on a layup by Ashlee Jones with 14:54 left to play. But the Thorobrettes rallied and cut the lead to 61-58 with 2:22 left to play on a 3-pointer by Cortney Matthewis. Matthewis led the Thorobrettes with 15 points.

With Benedict leading 65-61 with one minute left, the Lady Tigers were able to seal the game at the free-throw line, hitting six of eight from the line down the stretch.

Benedict had as much as a 14-point lead in the first half, but Kentucky State scored 10 straight points to cut the lead to 26-22. The Lady Tigers built the lead back to 34-24 at the half.

Benedict returns home for the first time since November to take on Albany State University on Thursday at the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.
