TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Benedict College Tigers saw their losing streak extend to five games as Stillman College rallied from a 14-point deficit and held on for a 76-73 victory on Monday night.
The Tigers led by as many as 14 points in the first half, only to see Stillman close out the first half on a 10-2 run to cut the lead to 38-32 at the half.
In the second half, back-to-back 3-pointers by Stillman's Damian Ford made the score 42-41 in favor of Benedict, and Stillman took its first lead of the game at 46-44 on a 3-pointer by Jeffery Wherry with 15:24 left in the game.
Another 3-pointer by Ford gave Stillman a 62-53 lead with 9:11 on the clock.
Benedict regained the lead on a 3-pointer by
Rickie Jackson, making the score 63-62 with 5:15 left in the game.
Stillman pushed the lead to five points with two minutes left, but a three-point play by
Marcus Goode made the score 72-70. A three-point play by
Tydran Beaty made it 74-73 with 26 seconds left, but Stillman sank a pair of free throws with 15 seconds left and the Tigers missed a pair of 3-point attempts in the final seven seconds.
Goode led the Tigers with 23 points, 13 rebounds and six blocked shots.
As a team, the Tigers shot 39.7 percent (27-of-68) and had 21 turnovers.
Benedict drops to 8-8 overall and 7-7 in the SIAC. Stillman improves to 9-8 overall and 7-8 in the SIAC.
Ford led Stillman with 21 points, hitting five 3-pointers. Ladarius Rhone had a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
The Tigers return home to face Morehouse on Thursday in an SIAC contest. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
