AUGUSTA, Ga. – Augusta State scored 13 straight second-half points to break away from a tie game and held on for an 82-71 victory over Benedict College on Wednesday.
A 3-pointer by
Rickie Jackson and a
Tydran Beaty dunk off a missed shot tied the game at 36 with 16:53 left to play. But the Jaguars scored the next 13 points to take a 49-36 lead with 14:47 to play.
The Tigers, now 2-1, were able to cut the lead to nine points, 55-46, with 9:25 to play. But the Jaguars, now 3-0, answered with a four-point play when Ryan Weems hit a 3-pointer, was fouled, and sank the free throw.
Benedict then cut the lead back to nine points, 61-52 with 6:42 to play, but Weems once again came up with a big 3-point shot.
Beaty led the Tigers with 22 points.
Lamar Adkins and
Xavier Collier added 15 points each.
The Tigers hit just 57 percent of their free throws, making 13 of 23 attempts. Benedict made 40 percent of its field goals overall, compared to 46 percent for Augusta State.
Weems led the Jaguars with 22 points, while D'Angelo Boyce added 19.
Benedict is home on Saturday to face USC Aiken. Tipoff is 3 p.m.
