Tigers Top Albany State For Sixth Straight Win

ALBANY, Ga. – Marcus Goode scored 18 points and Antrjuan Albright sank a pair of free throws with 12 seconds left to help lift the Benedict College Tigers to a 59-53 victory over the Albany State Golden Rams on Tuesday at the ASU HPER Gymnasium.

The Tigers won their sixth straight game and moved into a tie for second place in the SIAC standings with a 13-7 conference record and 14-8 overall mark.

Goode, the reigning SIAC Player of the Week, also had a game-high 10 rebounds. Rickie Jackson added 11 points, while Albright had 10.

After the two teams finished the first half tied at 25, Albany State scored first in the second half to take a 27-25 lead. But the Tigers responded by scoring eight straight points, including a jumper and 3-pointer by Albright, for a 33-27 lead.

The Golden Rams came back to briefly take the lead at 36-35 on a 3-pointer by Jaren Harris, but the Tigers went on an 11-0 run for a 46-36 lead with 9:58 left in the game.

The Tigers were ahead 51-41 after a free throw by Trevor Eichelberger with 8:05 on the clock, but the Golden Rams stormed back with eight straight points to cut the lead to 51-49 with 6:40 left in the game. A dunk by Goode made it 55-50 with 3:16 to play, but the Golden Rams cut the lead to 55-53 with 1:36 left. But the Golden Rams didn't score again and the Tigers got two free throws each from Goode and Albright to seal the victory.

Albany State scored the first seven points of the game, but the Tigers came back to take their first lead of the game at 10-8 on a jumper by Eichelberger. The game was tight the rest of the way in the first half, with the two teams tied at 25 at the break.

Albany State fell to 10-13 overall, 9-12 in the SIAC. Rachard Lofton led the Golden Rams with 13 points while Michael Tippins added 11.

The Tigers, who are tied with Tuskegee for second place in the SIAC and a half game behind conference leader LeMoyne-Owen, travel to face Fort Valley State on Thursday.
