Lady Tigers Cruise Past LeMoyne-Owen

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College women's basketball team closed out the 2011-12 regular season in impressive fashion with a 63-51 victory over LeMoyne-Owen College on Wednesday night in the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.

Brittany Jackson scored 19 points to lead the Lady Tigers, while pulling down 10 rebounds. Monique Weathers added 14 points, hitting three 3-pointers, while Santera Grooms also had a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

Benedict improved to 18-8 overall and 15-7 in the SIAC. LeMoyne-Owen dropped to 9-14 overall and 8-13 in the SIAC.

Benedict now waits for the official SIAC Tournament pairings to be released on Sunday, but most likely will be the fourth seed and receive a bye until Wednesday.

The Lady Tigers came out aggressive from the start, jumping out to a 17-5 lead less than six minutes into the game. They were able to push the lead to 31-17 on a 3-pointer by Grooms with 5:32 to play.

After the Lady Magicians cut the lead to 31-24, the Lady Tigers scored the final six points, including a jumper by Lateia Brailey with less than a second on the clock for a 37-24 halftime lead.

Benedict maintained a double-digit lead the entire second half, building as much as a 19-point lead on a pair of occasions.

Benedict held the SIAC's leading scorer, LeMoyne-Owen's Shonice Sprouse, to just seven points on 3-of-14 shooting.

Jasmine Massey led the Lady Magicians with 11 points, while Blair Scott and Ashley Mason each added 10 points.

Benedict shot 37.3 percent for the game, but held LeMoyne-Owen to 33.3 percent. Benedict had a 46-32 rebounding advantage.
