Tigers Win Seventh Straight, Top Fort Valley State 79-61

Box Score COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College Tigers continue to roll, winning their seventh straight game with a 79-61 victory over Fort Valley State on Monday night at the Benjamin E. Mays HRC Arena.

Xavier Collier led the Tigers, now 11-5 overall and 7-1 in the SIAC, with 20 points. Lamar Adkins added 15 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Rickie Jackson chipped in 12 points and Tydran Beaty had 11 points for the Tigers.

Benedict jumped out to a commanding lead in the first half, taking a 49-24 lead at the half. The Tigers made it 54-28 a minute into the second half on a 3-pointer by Jackson for their biggest lead.

Then the Wildcats made a run, scoring 12 unanswered points to cut the lead to 54-40 with 15:39 left to play. A 3-pointer by Fort Valley's Jeremy Sledge brought the Wildcats to within nine points, 57-48, with 13:35 to play. Benedict hit five free throws, including two by Jackson when Fort Valley State coach Samuel Jackson received a technical foul and was ejected from the game, to make it 62-48.

Fort Valley State scored the next six points, with Brandon Davey scoring a layup to make it 62-54 with 8:35 left to play. Collier responded with a jumper which kicked off an 8-0 Benedict run. A layup by Davey, who led the Wildcats with 22 points, made it 70-61 with 4:25 left to play, but the Wildcats did not score the rest of the way and Benedict claimed its seventh straight win.

Benedict shot 59.6 percent for the game, including a sizzling 69 percent in the first half. Fort Valley State shot 30 percent in the first half and 35.7 percent for the game.

The Tigers will take their winning streak on the road, facing league-leading Morehouse College on Saturday.
