Box Score COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College Lady Tigers rallied back from deficits in three games and Terae Sweeting had a career-high 25 kills to lead Benedict to a 3-1 victory over Johnson C. Smith in a non-conference volleyball match on Tuesday.

Benedict won the match 25-23, 21-25, 25-19, 25-18 to improve to 12-2 overall. Johnson C. Smith fell to 12-12 overall.

Johnson C. Smith had a 19-17 lead in the first game before Benedict scored five straight points to take a 22-19 lead, with Sweeting recording a pair of kills in that stretch. The Golden Bulls came back to tie the game at 22-22, but Benedict scored the next two points. Johnson C. Smith cut it to 24-23, but Benedict won the game on a ball handling error by the Golden Bulls.

Benedict jumped out to a 14-11 lead in the second game, but Johnson C. Smith rallied to tie the game at 16-16. The game stayed close and was tied 18-18, 19-19 and 20-20. The Golden Bulls scored two points to take a 22-20 lead. A kill by Lorena Leao make it 22-21, but the Golden Bulls scored the final three points to take the second game.

Johnson C. Smith jumped out to an early 12-6 lead in the third set. The Lady Tigers scored seven points in a row to take a 13-12 lead. Benedict scored six more points in a row for a 21-16 lead, with Sweeting providing back-to-back kills. Kills by Sweeting and Leao made it 23-18. Another kill by Leao made it 24-19 and Benedict won the game on a JCSU attack error.

The Golden Bulls took a 10-5 lead in the fourth game. Benedict rallied to tie the game at 12 as Asia Bailey recorded a block and a kill and Sweeting notched another kill. The game was tied 17-17 when Benedict scored four straight points, including back-to-back kills by Tatyana Robinson for a 21-17 lead. The Golden Bulls scored to make it 21-18 before Benedict closed out the match with four straight points, including a kill by Sweeting.

"Terae is unstoppable right now," Benedict coach Gwendolyn Rouse said. "It helped when I put Lorena next to Terae. That way we had four rotations where we are big. Tatyana had a good game. In that third set, Tatyana bailed us out with her serving."

Robinson added 10 kills, as did Leao. Leao had a team-high 15 digs. Ashley Jackson had 45 assists.

Jane Tukia led Johnson C. Smith with 15 kills.

Rouse blamed some of the slow start in each game due to the long layoff for the team. Tuesday's match was the first in two weeks for the Lady Tigers, who only practiced three times in that span.

"That probably played a part in it," Rouse said. "The good thing about it, they were well rested."

After the match, the Benedict volleyball team held a skills clinic for Alcorn Middle School and W.G. Sanders Middle School.

Benedict will be back in action on Friday against Albany State in a key SIAC East Division matchup.
