COLUMBIA, S.C. – Clark Atlanta rallied to win the first two games, and went on to take a 3-0 victory over Benedict College in an SIAC volleyball match on Tuesday.
Clark Atlanta won the match 25-20, 25-21, 25-18. Clark Atlanta improved to 16-6 overall and 10-3 in the SIAC. Benedict fell to 12-4 overall and 11-3 in the SIAC. Clark Atlanta defeated Benedict for the second time this season.
The Lady Tigers had a 17-12 lead in the first game before the Lady Panthers cut the lead to 17-16. An attack error and a ball handling error by Clark Atlanta gave Benedict a 19-16 lead, but the Lady Panthers scored six straight points, including a pair of aces by Kailyn Blackmon to take a 22-19 lead. Benedict cut the lead to 22-20 on a kill by
Asia Bailey, but Clark Atlanta closed out the game with three straight points, including an ace by Sierra Scoggins.
Benedict pulled away from a close contest in the second game and took an 18-14 lead. An ace by
Lorena Leao gave Benedict a 21-17 lead, but Clark Atlanta scored the final eight points for the win. The Lady Panthers scored on four blocks and a pair of aces in that final stretch.
Clark Atlanta jumped out to a big lead in the third game, 19-7. But Benedict showed some life and cut the lead with five straight points to make it 22-16. A kill by
Terae Sweeting and a block by Sweeting and
Jocolby Brown made it 23-18, but Clark Atlanta closed out the match with back-to-back kills by Keierica Howard.
After losing leads in Friday's loss to Albany State, Benedict coach
Gwendolyn Rouse said the team worked on holding leads and coming back from a deficit during practice on Monday.
"We just can't finish it," Rouse said. "It's basic passing, setting and hitting the ball, and we're not doing it. It is not acceptable."
Sweeting had eight kills and
Tatyana Robinson had seven kills to lead Benedict, which hit just .022 for the match.
Ashley Jackson had 20 assists and
Je'Nae Saunders had 12 digs.
Scoggins led Clark Atlanta with 15 kills and hit .429.
Benedict is on the road for its next three matches, taking on Shaw on Friday and Fayetteville State on Saturday in a pair of non-conference matches.
