Tigers Look To Close Out Season With A Win Over Lane

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College Tigers wrap up the 2013 season on Saturday with a home game against Lane College with the goal to avoid finishing the season with a losing record.

The Tigers enter the final game at 4-5, 2-2 in the SIAC. Lane enters the contest with a 5-4 record and 2-3 in the SIAC. Kickoff is 2 p.m. and the game will be available to hear on Stretch Internet, and Live Stats will be available as well.

Despite neither team being in the running for a conference championship or a postseason invitation, Benedict coach James Woody said there is a lot riding on this game for the Tigers, who want to finish with a non-losing record.

"It's extremely important to win this game here," Woody said. "I've been telling the guys all week, this is an extremely important game. We'll be 5-5, we didn't have a losing season, we didn't have a winning season. We're right where we need to be in the middle from 1-9 last year. We're right halfway where we need to be. This could carry momentum to our offseason workouts and spring football and fall camp next year. So it's an extremely important game for us."

The Tigers will have their hands full with the Dragons, who bring the SIAC's top passing attack. Lane senior quarterback Chris Rini is the SIAC's leader in most every passing category and averages 286 yards passing per game. He has three receivers ranked in the top 10 of the conference leaders, including Greg Moore, who is averaging nearly 91 receiving yards per game.

"They are very explosive offensively. They've done a great job up there as far as the passing game with the Hal Mumme type of offense they are running," Woody said, referring to the former Kentucky coach who is regarded as one of the founders of the air raid offense. "They're a pretty good football team, and their quarterback, Rini, he's the best we're going to see. We've got to contain him."

Woody said the defensive secondary, which was depleted by injuries, is getting healthier. But Woody said the key will be to put some pressure on Rini.

"The most important thing is we have to put pressure on that quarterback. We can't let him sit back there and throw the football. We've got to disrupt his passing scheme. If that front three, front four gets some pressure on him, I think we'll have a shot at them," Woody said.

The Tigers will be looking for an improved performance from their offense, which managed only a pair of field goals in last week's 31-6 loss to Albany State. Redshirt freshman quarterback Brandon Thompson completed just 9-of-25 passes for 87 yards last week.

"We've got a young quarterback. He's learning each week. In the passing game, he's getting better in practice. 9-for-25, that just can't cut it. He's got to be a better percentage type of guy and complete passes for us to have a chance. I think he's ready for the challenge and hopefully you'll see a different guy," Woody said.

The Tigers will also be recognizing 13 seniors: Martin Epps, Harlon Samuels, Reynard Parks, Evan Pegues, Alton Hairston, Tyri Harvey, James Peterson, Perez Nelson, Jayvis Ward, Devin Gainer, Brandon Beech, Allen Becton, and Jaylon Fulcher.
