COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Lane College Dragons shredded the Benedict College Tigers for 368 passing yards and took a 48-13 victory on Saturday at Charlie W. Johnson Stadium.

The Tigers closed out the 2013 season with a 4-6 record. The Dragons finish with a 6-4 record.

Lane's record-setting quarterback Chris Rini completed 29-of-39 passes for 347 yards and four touchdowns before leaving late in the third quarter with an injury. The Dragons finished with 530 yards of total offense, the most Benedict has given up this season. Benedict entered the game with the top-ranked overall defense in the SIAC, and sixth-best in the nation.

"That quarterback is one of the best I've seen in a long time. They had me worried coming into this game with the receivers and quarterback they had," Benedict coach James Woody said. "We didn't get enough pressure on that guy and gave him too much time. When you've got a great quarterback like that and give him time, he's going to hurt you."

The Benedict defense played well early in the game, holding the Dragons to a pair of first-quarter field goals by Rini, who doubles as Lane's placekicker.

Rini and the Dragons went to work midway in the second quarter, with Rini running for a 19-yard gain, then throwing five straight completions. On first-and-goal from the 1, Rini plowed ahead for a touchdown.

Benedict put together a nice drive on the ensuing possession, getting a 19-yard pass from Brandon Thompson to Maurice Griffin and a 25-yard run by Lorenza Cooper. The Tigers had a first-and-goal from the 5, but couldn't punch it in the end zone and Eduardo Hernandez missed a 28-yard field goal.

Lane took over and drove 80 yards on 10 plays, with Rini throwing a 37-yard touchdown strike to Jamion Dunning with 22 seconds left in the first half.

For the second straight week, the Tigers struggled offensively. Benedict had 76 yards of total offense in the first half as the Dragons jumped out to an 18-0 halftime lead. Benedict finished the game with 276 yards of total offense.

"We struggled a lot (on offense). We've got some major issues offensively that we're going to have to correct in the offseason," Woody said.

The Dragons scored 30 points in the third quarter with Rini throwing touchdown passes of 31, 6 and 28 yards.

"They had speed, and it showed. And we showed our youth.  We've got to get better," Woody said.

Benedict got on the board on a 28-yard pass from Marcus Graham, who replaced Thompson at quarterback in the second half, to Maurice Griffin. Graham added a 3-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter for the Tigers.

Graham completed 8-of-18 passes for 122 yards with one touchdown and an interception, while rushing for 43 yards and a touchdown. Lorenza Cooper had 54 yards rushing to lead the Tigers.

Rini gained 86 yards on the ground to go along with his 347 passing yards. Dunning led the Dragons with 10 receptions for 145 yards and three touchdowns.

Rodney Hall led the Benedict defense with nine tackles.

Despite ending the season with a lopsided loss, Woody looked back at the positive direction the program is headed, from a one-win season a year ago.

"There was a lot of improvement. This team has gotten better. We got a little stronger. We need to get a little faster. Without making any excuses, but injuries really took a toll by the fifth game, and we were just trying to hang on by playing number three guys, number four guys. Those freshman and young guys had to step up and those teams took advantage of it the last couple of weeks."
