COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Benedict College baseball team swept a doubleheader from Shaw University on Sunday at Tiger Field as Jocquse Brunson hit a three-run homer in the first game and
Yaniel Delgado pitched six shutout innings in the second game.
Benedict won the first game 11-8. The Tigers broke a 2-2 tie in the third inning as
David Weber had an RBI triple,
Doren Blake and
Daniel Young had back-to-back RBIs to take a 5-3 lead.
The Bears pulled ahead 6-5 in the top of the fourth inning on a two-run triple by Todd Sparrow. Sparrow later came home on a wild pitch.
The Tigers took the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth on Brunson's three-run homer.
Lashante Grimes led off with a double and
Kevin Davis reached on a bunt single. Brunson hit a deep ball to center field to score three runs and give Benedict an 8-5 lead.
Shaw added another run in the fifth, but Benedict responded with another three-run inning.
Elisha McDaniel scored on a bunt by
Kevin Davis, Brunson hit an infield single to score Davis and
Wilfredo Colon brought home Davis on a groundout.
Weber picked up the win, going 4 1/3 innings and striking out seven and giving up eight hits.
In the second game, Delgado went six innings, gave up three hits and struck out six as the Tigers won 7-0. Weber and
Lydell Moseby each had home runs. Moseby had a solo shot in the third inning, while Weber had a two-run blast in a four-run fourth inning.
The Tigers had 15 stolen bases in the two games.
Benedict improves to 4-0 on the season.
Benedict and Shaw will continue their series with a doubleheader on Tuesday in Raleigh.
